Tipping

Here are some things to consider doing. Some items may not be applicable to you.

Many workers rely heavily on tips for their income (they view tips the way most workers view their salary)

If you receive at least satisfactory service:

  • Tip the following people:
    • Bell hops (approx. $1 to $1.50 per bag)
    • Car washers
    • Concierge (approx. $2 for dinner reservations, more if they were hard to get)
    • Door person (approx. $1 to $1.50 per bag)
    • Hair stylists (approx. 10%)
    • Postal carrier (during holidays)
    • Newspaper delivery (periodically during the year and during the holidays)
    • Pizza delivery person – approx. $2

If you’re not sure whether to tip or how much:

  • Ask the person providing the service if customers usually tip and how much

During the holidays (e.g., Christmas):

  • Tip babysitters one nights pay
  • Tip nannies/housekeepers one week’s pay
  • Tip the building superintendent $25-300
  • Tip the doorman at least $25
  • Tip your postal carrier $5-20
  • Tip newspaper carriers $5-25
  • Tip your hairdresser $25-100
