Roller / Inline Skating

Here are some things to consider doing. Some items may not be applicable to you.

Before skating:

  • Put your name and phone number on your helmet so someone can call your home if you are seriously injured
  • Wear:
    • Skates which fit
    • Helmet which meets ANSI standards
    • Wrist guards (with metal or plastic stays on top of and under your wrist)
    • Elbow pads
    • Knee pads

Beginning to skate:

  • Try to keep your toes pointed slightly outwards
  • Try to avoid bending over
  • Try to avoid looking down at your feet
  • Keep your knees slightly bent
  • Alternately push each skate to the outside to move forward

While skating:

  • Stay well clear of vehicular traffic

If you start to fall:

  • Avoid catching your fall with your hands – wrist injuries are common for roller skaters
  • Try to fall on your rear end and one of your thighs
