Tornadoes
Here are some things to consider doing. Some items may not be applicable to you.
Well before a tornado might strike:
- Decide on the best place to go if a tornado is approaching, e.g., in a bathtub on the lowest floor (e.g., basement) nearest the center of the structure
If a tornado might be approaching:
If you’re outdoors:
- If possible, get into a strong building and put as many solid walls as possible between you and the tornado (e.g., basement or bathroom in center of house on lowest floor) and, if available, get into a bathtub
- If you can’t get into a building, crouch near a strong building
- If there are no buildings nearby, lay on the ground as low as possible (in a ditch if possible)
- Use your arms to protect your head and neck
If you’re in a car or mobile home:
- Do not try to out-drive the tornado
- Get out of the car or mobile home
