Light bulbs
Here are some things to consider doing. Some items may not be applicable to you.
Changing a light bulb:
- In one year in the U.S., light bulbs caused over 8,000 house fires resulting in approx. 50 deaths, and, light bulb burns resulted in over 12,000 emergency room visits
- Unplug or turn off power to lamp, if feasible
- Let old bulb cool
- Remove old bulb
If bulb breaks:
- Ensure power to lamp is turned off before removing rest of bulb
- Check label on lamp for maximum recommended wattage
If the maximum recommended wattage is not indicated on the lamp:
- For most lamps, use a bulb with a maximum of 60 watts
- Do not use a bulb which exceeds the maximum recommended wattage, especially in ceiling lamps
- Install new bulb
- Plug in lamp
