Light bulbs

Here are some things to consider doing. Some items may not be applicable to you.


Changing a light bulb:

  • In one year in the U.S., light bulbs caused over 8,000 house fires resulting in approx. 50 deaths, and, light bulb burns resulted in over 12,000 emergency room visits
  • Unplug or turn off power to lamp, if feasible
  • Let old bulb cool
  • Remove old bulb

If bulb breaks:

  • Ensure power to lamp is turned off before removing rest of bulb
  • Check label on lamp for maximum recommended wattage

If the maximum recommended wattage is not indicated on the lamp:

  • For most lamps, use a bulb with a maximum of 60 watts
  • Do not use a bulb which exceeds the maximum recommended wattage, especially in ceiling lamps
  • Install new bulb
  • Plug in lamp
