Lamps

Here are some things to consider doing. Some items may not be applicable to you.

Buying:

If considering buying a halogen lamp:

  • Be aware that the lamps can be a fire hazard
  • Ensure the lamp has a steel and glass guard to help keep flammable objects from getting close enough to bulb to catch fire
  • Ensure the lamp has an automatic thermal shut-off feature to help prevent fires

If you have an halogen lamp:

  • Ensure the lamp is placed well away from combustible items, e.g., curtains
  • Don’t place the lamp where it can be knocked over
  • Ensure the lamp is placed where children aren’t likely to throw flammable objects onto the lamp (don’t place in children’s rooms)
  • Ensure no flammable objects come into contact with the top of the lamp, e.g., don’t drape clothes over the lamp
  • Keep lamp away from bedding
  • Replace 500 watt bulbs with 300 watt bulbs to reduce the fire hazard

Regularly:

  • Never leave lamps on when you leave a room or leave the residence
  • Keep children and pets away from the lamps when turned on to avoid tipping lamp over

Monthly:

  • Unplug and clean dust from around bulb to reduce fire hazard
