Funerals
Here are some things to consider doing. Some items may not be applicable to you.
ASAP (preferably before person dies):
- Make arrangements to have organs donated to persons needing transplants (it’s advisable to sign a document indicating desires but it may be enough just to tell family members of desire to have organs donated)
- Determine whether body will be buried, cremated or donated to science
- Arrange for a cemetery plot
- Prearrange for funeral services but don’t prepay
- Ask for a price list
- Expect to pay approx. $2000 for a burial, $1000 for a cremation and nothing for donating to science
If you use a funeral home:
- Consider buying the casket from a retailer instead of from the funeral home can be much, much cheaper
- Don’t buy a casket which will protect body from elements – body decomposes better without protection, otherwise it becomes slimy
When person has passed away:
- Make arrangements to have organs donated (if desired)
- Confirm whether body will be buried, cremated or donated to science
- Arrange for, or confirm arrangements for:
- Cemetery plot
- Casket
- Funeral services
- Flowers for the service
