Flooding – general

Here are some things to consider doing. Some items may not be applicable to you.

If you have a plumbing problem and flooding is occurring or threatened:

  • Secure water near the leak (e.g., under the sink) or at the main valve for the residence
  • Determine if the problem item is still under warranty

If the item is still under warranty:

  • Determine who is permitted to work on the item
  • Contact your insurance company to determine if the damage is covered

If you live in an area susceptible to flooding:

  • Obtain flood insurance
  • Consider buying a pump
  • Consider having sand bag materials on hand
  • Decide what you would do if flooding appeared likely, e.g.:
    • Move items upstairs
  • Decide which items you would take with you if you had to evacuate

If flooding appears likely soon:

  • Move items to area in house which is least likely to be flooded
  • Move items to another location (besides your residence) which is less likely to be flooded
