____ Contact your insurance company to determine if the damage is covered

MOWING GRASS

WELL BEFORE MOWING:
___ Consider getting a mulching mower or getting a mulching blade for the mower you have - adds nitrogen to grass - better for environment (less grass going to landfill) - reduces need for fertilizing - you won't have to deal with clippings

If you need to get gas from a gas station:
Before taking off the cap of the can - to avoid an explosion due to static electricity igniting gas fumes:

___ Touch the can to the ground
___ Touch the gas pump nozzle to the can

___ Don't carry the gas can in the trunk

SHORTLY BEFORE MOWING:
___ Wait until grass is dry
___ Ensure blade is not dull - a dull blade make mowing more difficult and stresses the grass
___ Set mowing height to no less than 2 inches - cutting grass too short can cause it to grow faster and can encourage growth of weeds
___ Fill the fuel tank - you shouldn't refill the tank when the engine is hot
___ Walk through entire area to be mowed to check for items and debris (e.g., stones, twigs) which could be thrown by the mower and injure someone and/or could damage the mower
___ Ensure there will be no people, especially children, too close to the operating mower
___ Wear:
          - Protective shoes
          - Long pants
          - Safety glasses
          - Ear plugs

WHILE MOWING:
___ Never reach under the mower while it's operating
___ Don't leave an operating mower unattended
___ Be especially careful on any slopes
If grass is long:
___ Only cut approx. 1/3 of the length at one time
If using a riding mower:
___ Drive up and down slopes vice sideways
If the engine starts to vibrate:
___ Stop immediately to determine the cause
If you run out of fuel:
___ Wait until the engine cools down before refueling

REGULARLY:
Every few weeks:

___ Check the blades for excessive wear or damage

Twice a year:
___ Sharpen blades

Every two years:
___ Replace blades

WORKING ON A MOWER:
Before
:
___ Disconnect the spark plugs

____ Find one or more plumbers you think you can trust (see "To select a plumber" below)
____ Determine when the warranty expires

FINDING A PLUMBER:
____ Ask neighbors, etc. to recommend a plumber
____ Select potential plumbers from the yellow pages, etc.
____ Call the local Better Business Bureau to see if a potential plumber has had any complaints filed against them
____ Call the potential plumber to determine:
          - When they're available
          - How soon they can usually respond
          - How much they charge, e.g., just to look at a plumbing problem
          - How to get ahold of them

IF YOU HAVE A PLUMBING PROBLEM AND FLOODING IS OCCURRING OR THREATENED:
____ Secure water near the leak (e.g., under the sink) or at the main valve for the residence
____ Determine if the problem item is still under warranty
If the item is still under warranty:
____ Determine who is permitted to work on the item

IF A PLUMBER RECOMMENDS COSTLY REPAIR(S) OR REPLACEMENT:
____ Get a written estimate including:
          - What will be done
          - Warranty
          - Total cost
____ Get at least one additional estimate from a reputable company
