____ Call (800) 664-4435 for a free copy of the Consumer's Resource Handbook - lists all Better Business Bureau's, Consumer Affairs offices, Attorney General offices, etc in the U.S. (published by the U.S. Office of Consumer Affairs)
____ Contact your local Consumer Affairs office for guidance on finding a reputable contractor
BEFORE PAYING ANY MONEY:
____ Get a written contract signed by the contractor which specifies:
____ That corrections will be made at the contractor's expense
____ Which kinds of changes are included in the price
____ Exactly what is included
____ Start and completion dates
____ Payment schedule
____ Your right to withhold payment until all work is done
____ Get a receipt which specifies what it is for

____ Determine whether a building permit is required
____ Determine what needs to be inspected and when, e.g., footing holes for proper width and depth before filling with cement
IF YOU INTEND TO HAVE A CONTRACTOR DO A PROJECT:
____ Get at least three estimates in writing
____ Check with the Better Business Bureau
____ Check the references of contractor, companies, etc.
____ Look at previous work that contractor has done
____ Get everything in writing, especially the start and completion dates
If buying wood:
____ Consider using wood polymer composite boards - contain recycled materials - requires no maintenance
____ Call the local utility company to determine if there are any gas, electrical or water lines where you intend to dig
BEFORE APPLYING STAIN:
If wood is outside:
____ Wait 3-4 weeks - to let pores open up and to help ensure an even appearance
