Here are some things to consider doing. Some items may not be applicable to you.

Diabetes

In September 2010, the FDA ruled that the diabetes drug Avandia should only be used by patients who can’t control diabetes with other medications.

To reduce your chances of developing diabetes:

  • Exercise regularly
  • Don’t be overweight
  • Eat plenty of fiber and whole grains
  • Eat nuts in moderation
  • Avoid fad diets … just try to eat a healthy diet
  • Avoid highly-processed carbohydrates
  • Avoid sugary drinks … drink water, coffee and/or tea instead
  • Avoid trans fats which are often found in margarine, packaged baked goods, fried foods and products with “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil”
  • In moderation, eat foods with polyunsaturated fats e.g., nuts and seeds
  • Limit consumption of red meat and avoid processed meat
  • Don’t smoke
  • Consume alcohol in moderation

If you have diabetes:

Yearly:

  • Get a check-up – to ensure feet are not getting numb

Before exercise or other strenuous activity:

  • Find someone to stay with you
  • Ensure that person is familiar with the indications of hypoglycemia
